Then please get a good filter system to remove the fluoride and the chlorine, at a minimum.  And encourage public hearings to discuss stopping flouride addition to your public water supply.  Why? Because scientists from the EPA's National Health and Environmental Effects Research Laboratory have classified fluoride as a "chemical having substantial evidence of developmental neurotoxicity". Consistent with the EPA's conclusion, a continually growing body of human and animal research strongly suggests that fluoride can damage the developing brain. Below is a 5 minute video by a practicing dentist Dr. Bill Osmunson outlining the reasons to stop mass drugging society by adding flouride to drinking water.
  • Flouride is a drug given by prescription for ingesting.
  • A pea sized amount of toothpaste contains .25 mg of flouride. If swallowed, you should contact Poison Control.  8 ounces of flouridated water contains .25 mg of flouride. See the problem here?
  • The American Dental Association and Center for Disease Control recommend ZERO flouride in water for infants. Yet, have you noticed all that flouridated baby water for sale at the grocery store? And TAP WATER is 250 TIMES more concentrated in flouride than breast milk.
  • Dental Flourosis is caused ONLY from EXCESSIVE FLOURIDE and creates brittle, weak, stained teeth enamel.  About 1/3 of all American children are experiencing this dental "disease" now. What other types of damage to the bones and organ systems are being produced by excessive amounts of this toxic drug?
  • Flouridation makes NO DIFFERENCE in the health of teeth comparing cities, states, or countries that use flouride or not. Cavity rates have simply decreased due to better hygiene. So why are we flouridating water still since there is proof there is no benefit?
  • (I'm not recommending plastic bottled water either. Get your water tested, and buy a filter that works to eliminate the flouride until you can work with others to restore clean, safe drinking water back into your local government's priority list. The plastic bottles create their own chaos on the endocrine and nervous systems...as well as destroy the environment.)
I deal with the effects of damaged brains professionally every day. It can be a heart-wrenching journey to witness the injury and fight for recovery that my clients endure. It can also be infuriating when you realize that many of these situations were forced upon them unknowingly through the widespread use of WELL KNOWN TOXIC SUBSTANCES in food, air and water.  There is no one silver bullet answer to what is the exact cause of the unprecedented attack upon the human nervous system and developing brain. But we do know that we need to eliminate the KNOWN agents as quickly and as much as possible.

In 2006, the National Research Council of the National Academies issued its report Fluoride in Drinking Water: A Scientific Review of EPA's Standards. Since then, many more animal studies have been published and another 14 IQ studies have either been published or translated. Five more IQ studies wait translation from the original Chinese. This brings the total to 24 IQ studies that have found exposure to fluoride associated with lowered IQ.

At least 16 studies on animals have shown that fluoride has an effect upon the hippocampus and nine of these have been published since the NRC's 2006 review. Damage in this area of your brain usually results in difficulties in forming new memories and recalling events that occurred prior to the damage.

This an actual, verbatim quote from a new patient this past week about her teenage son.  There is nothing more powerful than witnessing a parent desperate to stop a child from hurting physically, emotionally or spiritually.  About two days later, this short video landed on my desk. It had the same effect as speaking with her had on my body: chills.  Is there something to do besides this medication which makes him feel worse in every describable way except that he is quieter and can focus a little better for the first six months he took it?  Yes.
  • First, I encourage you to watch the video and stay open to more options.
  • Second, get your kids out of the highly sensory stimulating and artificial environments of concrete and radio and TV's and strip malls...and get them OUTSIDE into GREEN NATURE. Just being outside in a natural setting increases attention and memory by at least 20%. Let the kids study at the picnic table! I used to intuitively just know this and deeply preferred to study in graduate school at local parks on a blanket. I avoided libraries like the plague. Here is a great article about some of the current research in this field by researchers at the University of Michigan (GO BLUE!): Nature and Attention. 
  • Third, add a high dose of pure, quality Omega 3 oils.  We simply cannot eat enough fatty, wild caught fish to compensate for our exorbitant amount of Omega 6 oils consumed in modern, junk food diets. Plus, I deeply question the mercury and PCB levels of most marine life since we have effectively destroyed our oceans with chemical and oil pollution.  So clean supplemental oil such as krill oil is the preferred choice for flooding your brain with this essential oil. Omega 3 and Attention 
  • Fourth, add a high quality antioxidant cocktail such as Vitamin C, Vitamin E and Pycnogenol to offset what may be a highly oxidative process creating some of the inattention chaos in the brain.  FYI, I currently take Nutrametrix OPC daily and trust the gluten free product.
  • Last, look into Neurofeedback or EEG Biofeedback to remove the unhealthy brainwave pattern that has ingrained itself into the neural network from a life of chemicals and food colorings, TV watching, noise pollution, nature deficiency, nutrient deprivation, physical and emotional trauma and more have created in the first place.
There are many more avenues for help, but I don't like the "one size fits all" approach to health, and prefer to keep the blog as general to help the vast majority of people as possible. Good luck on your journey to wholeness!
 
 
6 year old boy suspended 3 times. Is it ADHD? What should I do?

I receive a great number of emails per day from patients, friends and family looking for health-related answers to various questions.  I just realized that the time, energy and consideration I put into each private answer could better serve more people if I offered some generic responses on the blog instead. If you have questions, and I can help, I will try to answer you on the blog. I will never use any real names or identify anyone on the blog. Q: It looks like you do a lot of work with ADHD. My best friend's 6 year old son has been suspended (1st grade) three times. She is starting to think it is ADHD. She is against medicating and looking for other avenues. Her chiropractor has given her an extra supplement (not sure what) and fish oil to add to his multivitamin. Any info/advice you would share is greatly appreciated.

Yes, I work a lot with children AND adults with attention, focus and/or hyperactive issues. I use a combination of assessment tools to determine if the behavior is truly ADHD or something else altogether. I work in conjunction with the parents, the teachers, the pediatrician,  the psychologist/psychiatrist and then conduct my own EEG brain evaluation and sound pitch test to best determine IF it is ADHD or not.  I have no way of knowing if indeed this is remotely ADHD. I get great results without drugs via a combination of brain therapies and nutritional support and diet changes. (At the bottom of this article, you will find IMMEDIATE ACTION STEPS.)

I am deeply concerned about a six year old first grader being suspended three times. As a health care provider and a mother, this is unnerving. Before I jump to the conclusion that a child has any behavioral issue like ADHD,  I want to eliminate a few other possibilities. A number of things at a minimum need to be addressed:

1- Parenting style appropriateness and effectiveness
2- Classroom/teacher fit and effectiveness
3- Home life stress or inconsistency
4- General health of child including hearing and vision tests, gut function, diet, sleep patterns
5- Brain state of the child including nutrition, brain allergies, dysregulated brain rhythms

It is very important to not begin the blame game at teachers or mom or the effect of electrical towers or anything else out of our immediate and direct control. This is a waste of time. And this boy deserves better use of our energy. Rather, let's focus on improving the quality of the experiences of this child. Clearly, something is not working for him at a very deep level. Our job is to listen closely and help make his body and mind calm and at peace.

I recommend the parents get coaching on improving their way of listening, communicating and redirecting the child via a good child psychologist and/or parenting course such as Redirecting Children's Behavior. A great book I recommend to parents of ADHD children is Parenting Children with ADHD by Monastra. Even though this may not be ADHD, it offers practical parenting advice and a better understanding of children. This will give the parents much needed support when a child is behaving inappropriately.  Once the parents have received more insight from a licensed professional, they will be better prepared to speak calmly and rationally with the teachers and the school with more confidence and more useful information as to how to help this young boy. Even taking the very lazy route of watching a few YouTube segments of the Supernanny could prove helpful in learning how to better relate and speak to this child more effectively...that Jo is a marvel with kids! Again, this is no substitute for the more professional help I believe is quickly needed.

I'm very curious as to what he is eating, how his bowels function, his mucous load, his sleep patterns and more.  When I intuit into him, I pick up brain allergies more than ADHD.  Food allergies can create complete chaos and disorder in the body and mind of anyone at any age. But when the brain of a young child is being assaulted by them, it creates havoc and pain and the only outlet they have in this big, scary world is lashing out. Many ways to correct these problems are through healing the gut with probiotics (I like customprobiotics.com and Natren's non-dairy right now), a healthy, toxin free diet such as the Feingold Diet, the Carbohydrate Specific Diet, and guidelines posted on Weston A. Price. Here is 45 minute long interview on the Phil Donahue Show with pediatrician Dr. Rapp who did groundbreaking work on how allergies affect the behavior of children:
I suggest finding a holistic practitioner (Chiropractor with a strong Nutrition Practice, Naturopath, Chinese Medical Doctor, holistic pediatrician) and evaluating the gut and allergies. Amazing results in behavior change and reactivity have been achieved with the Bax 3000, Bax Aura, NAET and removal of those allergens from the diet and environment.  If indeed, there are some unbalanced brainwaves, I recommend seeing a local neurofeedback practitioner as well to calm, strengthen and restore a healthy pattern to the brain.
Immediate Action Steps:
  • Keep taking the Fish Oil. My better recommendation is Krill oil. 500-1000mg per day.
  • Remove Gluten, Soy, Casein (milk) and Corn from the diet. It may take up to 6 weeks to see a noticeable change because that is how long an allergen can circulate and keep turning on the same gene code.  It takes 6 weeks for the body to clear it completely.
  • Reduce or eliminate added sugar ESPECIALLY High Fructose Corn Syrup.
  • No sugar for breakfast. High protein meal with a small amount of berries/fruit after.
  • Probiotics on an empty stomach before bedtime. See above manufacturer.
  • Notice, we are not ADDING anything to the child except Omega 3's and probiotics. It is more about ELIMINATING his stress load/things that are highly likely to be burdening his nervous system.
  • No TV before school. (I'd prefer none at all for his sensitive brain.)
  • Lights out early, before 8 pm.
  • Seek professional help from the above resources.
I hope your friend finds this information useful. Please wish her well.  Let her know that there is strong reason to have HOPE. He can be helped. It may take a little effort and a little time, but he can be healthy and happy soon. That is how he is designed to be.
